In 2013, at the Flash Memory Summit conference in the Silicon Valley, Samsung announced the first 3D-based commercial product, after 10 years of research and development. What is 3D in this case? Basically, multiple layers of memory cells are grown within the same piece of silicon. This is actually the fifth storage dimension in the history of flash.
