Dr. Debasis (Debu) Baral was a leading executive in the storage industry for over 30 years. He led the consulting firm TORIT, where he worked on application-specific IoT devices. Prior to that he was VP of the Storage Laboratory at Samsung’s R&D Center, where he helped develop high areal density hard disk drives. He has contributed to the development, manufacturing, and customer engagement of both HDDs and SSDs. He also authored several journal papers, obtained 16 storage-related patents, and made presentations at important professional conferences including Storage Visions and Flash Memory Summit, where he served on our Conference Advisory Board.
Dr. Baral is survived by his mother, Durga Baral of Chandanagar, West Bengal, India, by his wife, Bertha Higa of San Jose, his sisters, Dr. Bani Baral, Rani Sinha, Dipali Sil, Jonaki Panja and numerous nieces and nephews. We appreciate his many contributions to Flash Memory Summit and the storage industry as a whole.
